Prof Dr Jürgen Kluge

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kluge born September 2, 1953 studied physics in Cologne and Essen holds a PhD in experimental physics (laser) and spent some time during his PhD work developing high-frequency elec-tronics for a US laser company holds a professorship in mechanical engineering at Technical University, Darmstadt, Germany.

Since January 1, 2010 Jürgen Kluge is CEO of Franz Haniel & Cie GmbH in Duisburg, Germany, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Celesio AG, Stuttgart, Germany.

Haniel is an internationally operating group with four corporate divisions: Celesio, CWS-boco, ELG and TAKKT. They are each independently active in the trade and service industries – and all market leaders. Haniel also holds 34.2 per cent share in METRO AG. In 2008, the group generated € 26.4 billion turnover. Around 50,000 employees contribute to Haniel’s success, 40,000 of whom are from outside Germany. 

Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH, the holding company, is responsible for group-wide strategic and financial leadership as well as human resources development. Group headquarters have been located in Duisburg for more than 250 years. Haniel has always been and remains a family-owned business. However, there is a strict division between ownership and management: since the start of the 20th century, the shareholders (which today stand at over 600) rely on external management to run the company.

From 1984 until 2009 Jürgen Kluge worked for McKinsey&Company in Düsseldorf, Germany. From 1999 until 2006 he led the German Office complex. Kluge was a long standing member of McKinsey’s Shareholder Council.

Jürgen Kluge has co-written books such as "Einfach überlegen/Simplicity Wins" and "Wachstum durch Verzicht/Shrink to Grow".  Recent publications include "Wissen entscheidet/Knowledge Unplugged", "Die Zukunft der Bildung", "Schluss mit der Bildungsmisere – Ein Sanierungs¬konzept", "Wirtschaftsmacht Europa (Economic Power Europe"), and "Globale Produktion", published in February 2006.
